Why We Introduced Speech Making Competition In AMSAY Conference – Obasi

The Speech Writing and Presentation Competition recently announced and introduced into the Annual Maritime Students And Youth Conference by the Conveners, Platforms Communications happened for a crucial reason.

Recall that after the maiden edition of AMSAY Conference in 2016, by the second year in 2017, we introduced Best Graduated Maritime Students Awards (BEGMASA), a concept we are using to stimulate healthy academic competition amongst maritime students by rewarding and celebrating academic excellence in various fields of maritime studies.

Since the introduction of BEGMASA into AMSAY Conference, about 35 Best Students from various maritime schools in Nigeria have been identified, honoured, celebrated and rewarded with awards, even as some have gained automatic employment, sea-time, scholarship for professional trainings and or cash prizes.

While we appreciate the impact of BEGMASA in rewarding academic excellence amongst maritime students; we also saw a need to cultivate Speech Making Skills amongst maritime students so that in the future we will have the likes of Dr Chris Asoluka, Capt Dr Fola Ojutalayo, Engr Greg Ogbeifun, Otunba Kunle Folarin, Mrs Dabney Shall-holma and a host of others who have become renowned eloquent speakers on maritime topics in the sector.

Because AMSAY Conference is positioned as part of the maritime industry’s succession plan aimed at grooming future professionals and leaders of the industry, we have come to appreciate the importance of Speech Presentations and the  unique roles that eloquent speakers play in causing changes, driving transformation and educating people’s minds for positive development. Hence, the need to imbibe Speech Making Skills in the future leaders of the industry.

This is not an Essay Competition. Already, there are some essay competitions by some other brands in the sector.  This is Speech Writing and Presentation Competition, comprising Writing Skills and Speaking Skills. So this is different and deliberate. And our objective is simple and clear!

In doing this, we have identified one of the eloquent core maritime professionals in the person of Capt Dr Fola Ojutalayo and named the Speech Making Contest in his honour this year.

Capt Dr Fola Ojutalayo

Capt Fola Ojutalayo now a PhD holder is one of the finest captains the foremost maritime school, Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology (FCFMT) has produced. He is a bridge between the old and the young Nigerian Seafarers; a maritime consultant, an experienced and competent sailor, a senior lecturer at FCFMT and above all, a mentor and an eloquent speaker.

And so we ask: Who will win 2022 Capt Dr Fola Ojutalayo’s Speech Making Competition and go home with the Award and Cash Prize?

Find out at the forth-coming 6th AMSAY Conference on May 27, 2022 at Rockview Hotel Apapa-Lagos.

Mr Sylvanus Obasi; FOR: Platforms Communications.
