Face Of Maritime International (FOMI) has honoured the Managing Director, Nigerian Ports Authority, Hadiza Bala Usman as FOMI Role Model Ambassador 2019/2020.
The Award was conferred on the NPA Boss at the occasion of the 4th Grand Finale/FOMI 2019 Women Empowerment Night held last Saturday in Lagos.
Speaking at the occasion, the Project Director, Face Of Maritime International, Mr Sylvanus Obasi said the honour was a recognition of Hadiza’s tremendous efforts in promoting gender equality and women empowerment not only in the maritime sector but in the country at large.
He stated that adopting the NPA boss as FOMI Role Model Ambassador means that she would play the role of a mentor and role model to FOMI queens, and to all young women who are aspiring to take a career path in the maritime sector.
Obasi further emphasized that the achievements of Hadiza Bala Usman as the first female Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority in the last 3 years and her passion for excellence have distinguished her as an outstanding role model worthy of emulation by all women in the maritime industry.
Responding after receiving the award, the Managing Director, Nigerian Ports Authority, Hadiza Bala Usman commended the organisers of Face Of Maritime International for their laudable initiative in promoting greater participation of women in maritime professions.
The MD who was represented by the General Manager, Corporate and Strategic Communications, Engr Adams Jatto also thanked the Management of Face Of Maritime International for the honour conferred on her as FOMI Role Model Ambassador.
She stated that the award would challenge her to continue to do more in promoting gender equality and women empowerment for a better society.
She also promised to be a worthy ambassadors and role model to other young women who might be looking up to her for direction.
Similarly, Face Of Maritime International also used the occasion to honour the Managing Director, Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Engr Fidet Ohkiria and 6 others with a Special Recognition Award.
According to Mr Sylvanus Obasi, Project Director, Face of Maritime International, “FOMI Special Recognition Award aims to identify and celebrate men who are gender sensitive, men who promote gender equality and men who support women empowerment using their respective offices and positions.
Other recipients of this award include: Mr Johnson Chukwu, MD/CEO, Cowry Assets Management Ltd, Capt Ogah Abel, Director General, Merchant Navy Directorate, and Comrade Prince Adewale Adeyanju, President-General, Maritime Workers Union Of Nigeria (MWUN)
Others are: Dr Mkgeorge Onyung, President, Ship Owners Association of Nigeria (SOAN), Dr Bashir Jamoh, President, Chartered Institute Of Transport Administration (CIOTA), and DC Joseph Attah, National Public Relations Officer, Nigeria Customs Service.
On the other hand, Face Of Maritime International also presented Maritime Amazons Awards to the Former President of Women International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA) Mrs Funke Agbor – SAN, and 9 other deserving women.
Speaking while making the award presentation to the awardees, Mr Sylvanus Obasi, Project Director, Face Of Maritime International explained that the Maritime Amazons Award (MAA) is a conception of FOMI aimed at identifying and celebrating outstanding women who have shattered the proverbial glass ceiling in their maritime careers or field of endeavours.
Obasi hinted that by telling the uncommon stories of these uncommon women, the younger generations of women would be encouraged to work hard towards achieving their own career dreams.

Others are: Mrs Folake George, President, Women In Logistics And Transport (WILAT), Mrs Mary Madu Hamman, President, WISTA Nigeria, Barr Mrs Jean Chiazor-Anishere, President, Women In Maritime Africa (WIMA) and Principal Partner, Ofianyi Chambers, Barr Mrs Tosan Edodo-Emoren , Principal Partner, Oritsematosan, Thorpe & Associates and Dr Mrs Felicia Mogo, Head, Marine Environment Management, NIMASA.
