It gives me great pleasure and a sense of honour to welcome you all to this flag-off Campaign of the 2019 Girls Go-To-Sea Campaign program by the Face Of Maritime International. Today’s occasion, Girls Go-To-Sea Campaign (GGOTSEC) is the pet-project of Face Of Maritime International. It is instructive to recall that this campaign was first flagged off here at Osborne School Complex, Ikoyi precisely on June 6, 2017 by the Pioneer FOMI queens with over 200 school girls in attendance. Two years after, we are here again for this same purpose. I think we all deserve a round of applause.
Someone may ask, What is Girls Go-To-Sea Campaign? And I will simply answer that Girls Go-To-Sea Campaign (GGOTSEC) is a catch – them – young campaign program targeted at secondary school girls with a view to sensitizing and encouraging more Nigerian girls to take maritime career path. GGOTSEC requires that myself and my fellow FOMI queens would have to feature on several Radio and TV stations or programs, and also visit secondary schools as we are doing today to create awareness for Nigerian girls to study maritime related courses at the tertiary education level in order to take career opportunities available for women in the maritime industry.
PURPOSE: In doing this, our aim is to see in the nearest future; more Nigerian women become Seafarers, Oceanographers, Marine Engineers & Surveyors, Maritime Lawyers, Navigators, Naval Architects, Manning Agents, Stevedores, Chandlers, Ship Owners, Master Mariners, freight forwarders, Customs brokers, and the likes. This is in line with the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) policy which advocates gender balance in the maritime work environment.
EXPECTATIONS: As we carry out this campaign here today for the second time, it is our expectations that some of you who may have wanted to become Doctors, Bankers, Lawyers, Doctors and the likes, will today decide that you want to become maritime professionals such as Seafarers, Captains, Marine Engineers, Port Managers, Maritime Lawyers, Customs Brokers and the likes. It is also my hope and believe that in the next ten or more years, one of you here will rise to be the next DG of NIMASA or the next MD of NPA, or even the the President of WISTA Nigeria because what a man can do, a woman can do even better.
Finally, I hereby urge you all to listen attentively to all the talks that will be given to you here today about maritime. Feel free to ask questions and begin to develop interest in maritime careers because your decision today will guarantee your success in the future. On this note, I welcome you once again to this occasion. Thank you very kindly for your attention. God bless you all.
