A lot has already been said and known about tug boats and their characteristic functions as special kind of ships, but in this article, Sylvanus Obasi of Platform Reporters underscores the uniqueness of MV Osanyamo, a newly built vessel acquired recently by a Nigerian shipowner, Starzs Investment Company Ltd.
Unique Features: Built and delivered in 2018 by DAMEN Shipyards in China to Starzs Investment Company Ltd, MV Osanyamo is an ASD 5114 Tug Model. It is the first and largest of the new Damen Azimuth Stem Drive range.
She is a state – of – the – art, highly manoeuvrable vessel, fully equipped for offshore operations and measures 52.3 metres in length, displacing 800 tonns, 268 square metres of deck space at 5 tonns load per M2, large fuel and water tanks with transfer capabilities and towing winches both fore and aft. Her bollard pull capability is up to 111 tonns astern, and 108 tonns ahead.
The vessel has a double – tie deckhouse which provides accommodation for 14 crew and up to 10 additional personnel built in compliance with the requirements of NLC which came into effect in 2016.
Its propulsion is via two main diesel engines powering twin nozzles designed and built by Damen Marine Components.
Other additional capabilities include, fire – fighting (FiFi1) and oil recovery operations, with 101 m of integral oil recovery tanks. The vessel is also equipped with a dedicated patfinder water jet driven line handling craft to handle hoses and lines for cleaning, inspection and repairs on the aft deck.
Main Function: The primary purpose of MV OSANYAMO is to assist in tanker lifting operations alongside FPSOs in the Gulf of Guinea. This will take place under a contract with Total Exploration & Production Nigeria Limited.
